Martial Arts History

Having started in the far east, Martial Arts has spread worldwide and is one of the most popular physical and mental disciplines of our times. It currently has over 100 million students that practice it as a form of self defense. Using the body, to perform movements that can be used to defend against an attack, is the main staple of martial arts. Single movements are called katas. These movements are combined into what is called forms or poomse. Martial arts instructors are called sensei, while schools are usually called dojos. If you are not familiar with martial arts, and these terms sound like Greek to you...its because they are Asian terms. But once you begin the practice of Martial Arts, knowing and understanding the terminology will become second nature to you. In addition to the actual practice of Martial Arts, Martial Arts is also used for meditating and physical fitness.

Tang Soo Do History

Originally known as Soo Bahk Do, Tang Soo Do has its origins in ancient Korea during the 3 kingdoms...the Koguryo Dynasty in 37 BC in northern Korea, the Silla Dynasty was in 57 BC in the southeast peninsula and the Paekche Dynasty which was founded in 18 BC. The Silla Dynasty is most often credited with the growth of martial arts. In fact, most Korean martial arts trace their spiritual and technical heritage to the Silla dynasty and Hwa Rang Dan. Today, many relics of Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Kee) from this era have survived, including the Koguryo wall painting depicting martial arts, which is at least 1500 years old. In the 1st half of the century, martial arts were forbidden in Korea, after the Japanese occupied the area. Today, Tang Soo Do and Tae Kwon Do are the most popular forms of Martial arts originating from Korea!
