KarateKarate is a Japanese word meaning, open hand. Although most people think of karate as a means of combat it is much more than that. Karate students are taught dedication, discipline and how to have a positive attitude. The basics of karate include numerous physical poses, stances, kicks, punches, blows, etc., often accompanied by certain breathing techniques. Students climb in rank as they become more skilled, knowledgeable and efficient. Strength of mind and body is developed and a belt ranking shows the students abilities. White is the lowest belt a student can have, and black is the highest. Black belts are then divided by degrees, such as a Black Belt 1st degree, Black Belt 2nd degree, etc. Karate classes often teaches fundamentals and katas. Katas are the movements that are used in combinations to practice a particular style of martial arts, often being the main component that makes styles distinguishable from one another!
