Ninja-ToThe short sword hardly ever left the bushi's belt for any reason,although the long sword could be removed when custom required:for example,when at home,or while visiting another bushi's home,or within the confines of the ruling lord's palace. At such times,the warrior was"permitted"(actually required)to leave the long sword in a safe place or in responsible hands,but this ruling and custom did not include the short sword. Often defined by its owner as "the gardian of his honour" (Stone,658),the wakizashi was later replaced by a dirk for the grim purpose of ritual suicide.
