It could be hardened by pounding it cold and it could be hardened by chopping it into water having been heated to certain temperatures. Swords do not occur in nature. Man may copy some design of nature but a steel sword is composed of the directed creativity of the human mind and the elements of the earth. Anyone who forges a sword must become a master of the elements. He must understand how to use the fire just like it was a tool. The fire becomes part of the steel.
