The throwing star, shaken, or tonki as it is known is not a "deadly" weapon. It is more of disabling or distraction weapon. The fukiya (blowpipe) was a short-range weapon used for assassination and as a distraction. Easily disguised as flutes or canes, the fukiya used darts comprising of a steel sliver and paper cone, but could also fire poisoned darts or secret messages could be written in the paper cone. The kusarifundo (chain-weight) was a short chain with weights attached to each end..
