In the beginning, magic and sorcery were inextricably linked to religion. It was the priests who practiced magic as a means of exerting power over their devotees. Through their training or birth they acquired the knowledge of magic words, magic actions, and/or the knowledge of magic objects to work their spells. Through the ages they were variously referred to as wizards, warlocks, necromancers, medicine men, shamans, sorcerers, magi, or witch doctors.

Magic Words: It was believed that some words known only to the magician, when spoken in a certain order and in a certain way, produced supernatural outcomes. These were referred to as incantations or spells. Other words had no special power in themselves, but when spoken by a magician, produced magical results.

Magic Actions: Ancient magicians carried with them an aura of power. It was thought that a look or the wave of a hand or the pointing of a finger could produce magic. Some actions needed to be combined with words, especially for deep and powerful outcomes.

Magic Objects: Certain plants, stones and animals were thought to possess magical properties. To be in the presence of these things might be enough to facilitate magic, whilst in other cases the object might become the ingredient of a magical potion. Some races believed that spirits inhabited these objects, and they were greatly revered. Talismans, charms or amulets were thought to be imbued with magic, especially if inscribed with magic symbols, and they were carried for good luck or protection against evil.
