Magic came to
be regarded as either Black Magic, that which was designed
to harm people, or White Magic, intended to help them.
Witches were thought to use black magic, whilst Saints used
white magic. Some magic used models of real things, upon
which spells were placed. This was based on the belief that
having some part of a body or thing gave you control of it.
Taboos and voodoo involved this type of magic.
During the Middle Ages nearly all Europeans believed in
magic, though the Church regarded it as evil, and severely
punished those caught practicing it. Any woman suspected of
being a witch for instance, was usually put to death.
Science was often akin to magic, and those pursuing it led
dangerous lives. One famous group were the alchemists who
for hundreds of years sought a way of turning base metals
such as lead and iron into gold. Many forms of magic had a
basis in fortune telling; predicting the future by reference
to the lines on one’s palm, the fall of tarot cards, or
the position of the stars and planets in the night sky.
However as science gained a foothold, belief in magic began
to wane. Today, there is a general skepticism about magic,
though there are still many who place their faith in
astrology and horoscopes, and who feel uncomfortable walking
under a ladder, and will cross the street to keep out of the
path of a black cat. Personally, I never worry about such
silly superstitions, because I have my lucky four leaf
clover and rabbit’s foot to protect me.
