Refer to the Adults
Bedroom page for general tips that also apply to this section.
1) The most
important first step to realizing the benefits of Feng Shui is to perform a
Space Clearing procedure. Every environment has accumulated negative energy,
or "sha chi", that needs to be eliminated. This procedure will
make all other cures more effective.
2) The most
important principle when working with a teenager is to be very flexible. You
must make allowances at this time in ways which might be totally contrary to
the guidelines of Feng Shui, . Be content with small victories!
3) Try to give your
teen as much physical space as possible.
4) The principle of
avoiding clutter applies as much to your teen's bedroom as it does to any
other room. Remove items from her room that she has outgrow and install lots
of shelves or hooks for getting clothes off the floor. Add some throw
pillows and a big comfy chair. Teens want their room to feel less like a
bedroom and more like a hangout.
5) Avoid
placing your teen's bed under a beam or sloping ceiling, as these are
oppressive and can cause restlessness, insomnia or even depression or other
health problems. If there are no options, hang a wind chime or crystal
in the problematic area.
6) Today's teens
love the color black, which is understandable, since it is the color that
symbolizes introspection and potential transformation. Allow your teen to
indulge their craving for black by letting them paint a desk or other
inexpensive piece of furniture. Drape a comfy chair in black fabric or buy a
set of black sheets that are just for them. While you might need to call a
stop at black walls, you will find that your teenager really will appreciate
your flexibility.
7) The images
that your teen chooses to decorate with might very well rub you the wrong
way. This is another area where you must be tolerant and patient. Art that
depicts graphic violence or sexuality is a concern and may be a signal that
guidance is required. There are entities in Feng Shui which inspire very
positive qualities, and your teen might find them "cool", as well.
Hotai, the happy
Buddha, is a symbol for kind-heartedness, lighthearted wisdom and good
will. He is also considered very lucky. Kuan Yin represents compassion and
kind heartedness and having yin, female qualities, is especially appropriate
for young women. Finally, the dragon
inspires strength ,courage and indemonstrable will and is also considered a
very lucky symbol.
8) ) Lots of
teens love candles. This isn't surprising since they symbolize a lighting of
the path to understanding, and self searching and exploration. Allow the candles, but encourage safety. Small votives in durable, spill proof glass
holders are great for this purpose.
9) Provide
your teen with several "cool" hanging crystals.
These will help create positive 'chi' and they look great hanging in
sun-filled windows.
10) Open the
windows in your teenager's room when ever possible. This will keep the 'chi'
fresh and vital and make your teen feel better, whether they like it or not!
11) Since
your teens schooling is especially critical during theses years, emphasis
should be placed on keeping them focused on their learning.
