The
Easy Feng Shui Guide
Feng Shui Tips -
Dining Room
1.) The most
important first step to realizing the benefits of Feng Shui is to perform a
Space Clearing procedure. Every environment has accumulated negative energy,
or "sha chi", that needs to be eliminated. This procedure will make
all other cures more effective. .
2.) A round dining
table is considered the most auspicious shape, since it allows chi to flow
smoothly. A square shape would be the next best choice. When using a square or
rectangular table, place a round or octagon shaped bowl
or dish
in the center.
3.) The dining table
should not be so large as to make the space feel cramped and difficult to
maneuver around. Strive to create a balance between the furniture and the size
of the room. Always avoid overcrowding.
4.) Consider poison
arrows when arranging furniture in the dining area. These would consist of
corners from other pieces of furniture in the room that will point directly at
people sitting at the table. Soften unfavorable corners with beautiful, live,
round edged plants.
5.) The material from
which the table is built is another important consideration. Light, soft
woods, such as elm or pine, have a casual feeling and are great for every day
family dining. Darker hardwoods such as teak or mahogany are more formal.
Marble or glass will create very fast moving chi, which can make for lively
conversation at a dinner party, but may prove to be a bit chaotic for meals
with the kids.
6.) Atmosphere around
the table can be altered by the use of various table linens, from casual and
fun, to extremely sophisticated, depending on the desired effect. Be creative,
but always remember that less is more.
7.) There should be an
even number of chairs around the table. The ideal chair style is high backed
with armrests, as these are considered to provide protection and support.
8.) Soft shades of
green or yellow with some minimal touches of red or orange create an
appetizing atmosphere. Soft shades of salmon, apricot or peach are also good
choices. Rely on enlivening natural light, if available, during daytime hours,
and soft, even lighting for evening dining.
9.) The dining room,
or area, should be tastefully but minimally decorated. Avoid cluttered
displays of collectables in this area, since these are usually magnets for
dust. Choose art with subject matter that inspires good appetite and
relaxation. A beautiful still life of succulent fruit, a
calming scene from nature, or a tasteful, not too busy, painting of a
happy gathering of people, would be perfect here. Save the stormy seascapes
and the hunting scenes for somewhere else!
10.) Placing a mirror
in the dining room is considered very good Feng Shui. It will multiply the
warm, happy times that are shared there with family and friends, and increase
the blessings of healthy food and abundance. Placing a bowl of beautiful,
fresh fruit on the table when it isn't in use, and having it reflected in the mirror,
is another way to symbolize the multiplying of blessings.
11.) It is considered
important in Feng Shui to isolate the eating space. It should have a safe and
somewhat intimate atmosphere. If your living space doesn't have a separate
dining room, consider using a screen or an arrangement of furniture to section
off the area used for dining.
12.) A crystal
chandelier or a beautiful hanging lamp with a circular flowing shape is a
wonderful feature in the dining room Not only does it contribute to creating a
special atmosphere, but also assists in a positive flow of 'chi'.
13) Lighting
candles in the dining areas is a simple and beautiful way to keep the energy
heightened and renewed. Lit candles also create a welcoming and intimate
ambiance.
14) If you are
fortunate enough to have windows in your dining area, allow natural light and
fresh air to enliven the 'chi' on a regular, preferably daily, basis. Hang crystals
in this area to further enhance the vital, 'chi' energy of the space.
15.) When
entertaining, be sure that your guests have a clear view of the doorway to the
room. This will make them feel comfortable and secure. Seating positions where
the back is to the doorway are the least favorable and should be avoided
whenever possible.
16.) Choose
centerpieces for mealtime with care. Be sure that they don't block one
person's view of another and do not hider easy access to food items on the
table. Candles are best at low heights since they can create odd, flickering
shadows and may be more easily knocked over if they are tall.
17.) Before a
dinner party or any type of social gathering, ensure that your dining area is
filled with clear, positive energy. Performing a quick clapping procedure
and/or ringing a singing bowl or tingshas and burning incense
will make your dining room sparkle with energy.
