The Easy Feng Shui Guide

Feng Shui Tips - Adult Bedroom

1) The most important first step to realizing the benefits of Feng Shui is to perform a Space Clearing procedure. Every environment has accumulated negative energy,or "sha chi", that needs to be eliminated. This procedure will make all other cures more effective.
2) Choose soft, nurturing colors to create a soothing, restful atmosphere in the bedroom. Peach, terracotta, taupe, and warm off-whites are all good choices.

3) Use a minimum of red in the bedroom. A few splashes here and there will increase romance and passion, but an abundance is too yang and can disturb sound sleep.

4) It is important that both members of the couple feel comfortable with the bedroom decor. Don't fill the room with flowers and lace if your mate hates it. It is important for intimacy and a sense of equality that both people contribute to, or at least feel comfortable with, the colors and decor of the bedroom.

5) Keep your bedroom free of clutter. Get in the habit of putting away clothes and personal items immediately. Keep furnishings simple so that chi flows freely.

6) If your bedroom is connected to a bathroom, keep the bathroom door closed at all times. If possible, place a decorative screen between your bed and the bathroom door.

7) Open bedroom windows for at least 30 minutes every day to allow fresh air and fresh 'chi' to enter.

8) It is considered problematic for the head of the bed to share a wall with the doorway since this is thought to disturb sound sleep and cause disagreements in the relationship. If this is your case, consider placing a screen, or some other diversion, between the bed and the door.

 9) Beware of placing the bed under overhead beams, bookcases, or shelves. All of these are oppressive and can aggravate problems such as headaches, restlessness, and insomnia.  If it is impossible to relocate the bed, Crystals and small Hanging Charms are simple cures for these conditions.

10) Placing a beautiful Kwan Yin in the bedroom, especially on the bed side table, provides powerful symbolism of healing and longevity, as well as harmony in the relationship.

11) Never place the head of your bed against a wall with a toilet on the other side. This is considered detrimental to health and must be avoided.

12) Never position your bed under a sloping ceiling. This directs too much fast moving 'chi' down on you as you sleep and can cause insomnia, depression, and other imbalances in your health. If this type of architecture is unavoidable, a wind chime with horizontal bamboo mounting can help to redirect this oppressive force.

13)Placing candles in the bedroom, especially pairs in shades of red or pink, or those intended to enhance romance, is a great way to energize your relationship. Be sure to light them often to create an atmosphere of  sensuality and intimacy.

14) Choose bedding that is made of natural materials. A top covering of cotton on a mattress is a good idea. Avoid mattresses that have been treated with formaldehyde or arsenic to control mildew and insects. These are definitely not good for health. An ideal material for a mattress is latex, a completely chemical-free, natural substance that is affordable and very comfortable.

15) Waterbeds are not considered a wise Feng Shui choice. The water element must be very limited in the bedroom for good health, and waterbeds create an overabundance of water

16) Always make the bed when not in use.

17) Arrange bedroom furniture so that the corners of dressers or chairs are not aimed at you while you sleep, as these create poison arrows which may create restlessness and insomnia.

18) It is preferable to avoid placing a T.V., computer, or other electronic equipment in the bedroom. If this is unavoidable, these devices should be enclosed in a cabinet, or at least covered with cloths when not in use, especially at night while sleeping. The energy produced by these machines is thought to destroy good 'chi' and is considered unhealthy.

19) Beware of air conditioning. Recycled air is dead air. There is no fresh healthy 'chi' to revitalize you as you sleep. Try to get into the habit of leaving a window open at night. If this is not possible, use an air purifier that emits negative ions to replicate the energy quality of fresh air

20) Never place a mirror opposite, over, or at the side of your bed. Mirrors have a profound effect on the movement of  'chi' and are way too powerful for healthy sleep. It is also said that a mirror near the bed will invite outside interference into the relationship. Strictly speaking, there should be no mirrors in the bedroom at all, but if this can not be avoided, place it in an area where you can't see your reflection in while lying in bed.

21) Avoid hanging art with reflective surfaces in the bedroom. Use non-reflective glass, or ideally, tapestries, weavings, scrolls or other fabric-oriented art.

22) A plant in the bedroom is helpful for adding the healthy wood element and to improve air quality, but keep the number of plants to a minimum and relatively small size. Choose varieties with soft rounded leaves. Peace lilies are a good choice.
