Oriental painted fans date back to Egyptian times, when they were used by nobility and for religious purposes. After paper was invented and perfected in ancient China, it began to be used on these decorative pieces, thus painted Oriental fans came into existence. By using paper to create these Asian paintings of sorts, it allowed artisans to more easily make them. these painted fans usually displayed writing or a simple landscape. A thousand years ago, simple forms of paint were used to create the painted Asian fan, but today acrylic and oil are the two most common mediums.
Most Oriental painted fans are made from acrylic paints, which are cheaper than oil and easy to use. Some painted Oriental fans use oil, although its rarely seen. Most of these decorative works of art are made with a polyester or cotton fabric attached to a bamboo frame. Sometimes the fabric on these painted wall fans is dyed a particular color and sometimes it is left white. This is done to create a background color on the painted Asian fan, which helps the artist to better create the scene.
