Skills of the Vagabonds by Lung Ting BOOKThe Skills of the Vagabonds are from where the Japanese Ninjutsu originated. This book reveals all the top secrets of Chinese Black-art, Defraudation, "Mou Shan" Witchcraft, Drugs and Poisons, Great Magic Shows, "Body-Disappearance" Techniques, Vagabond Kungfu, etc. Esoteric traditional Chinese beliefs can be quite difficult to understand, both in theory and practice. Although many people wish to know what value, if any, such arts as acupuncture, chi kung, and the martial arts can offer, this task is often complicated by grandiose claims backed up by trickery and sleight of hand. Media representations, both fact and fiction, further complicate the issue. For a non-magician, such as myself, it is often difficult to determine the nature of the trickery that could be behind these claims. Furthermore, due to the exotic and often dangerous nature of the stunts performed, few conventional works on conjuring cover the sorts of effects chi gong and martial arts practitioners often demonstrate. For example, few magic books are likely to describe how one can thrust a chopstick against your own windpipe in such a way that the chopstick shatters instead of the windpipe collapsing? Leung Ting is a Chinese martial artist from Hong Kong who has a reputation as a master of Wing Chun Kung Fu. (Wing Chun is a Southern style of kung fu, known for its mastery and emphasis on close in fighting techniques.) He has authored several books on this art, as well as works on other styles of kung fu, martial arts weaponry, and Chinese arts such as the proper performance of the Lion dance. (The Lion Dance utilizes a string of people behind a large heavy green mask, and is frequently seen in Chinese New Year's day parades.) The two volumes in his "skills of the vagabond" series are sure to be of interest to skeptics. Described in these works are many techniques of trickery, sleight of hand, and deception. The first work is more exotic in nature, focusing on many ancient Chinese arts and beliefs. Among topics included are methods by which Taoist sorcerers and others could achieve spectacular "magical" effects, by using trickery. Methods of performing these stunts are described in full. Among the subjects covered that are not related to paranormal beliefs are the history of "the skills of the vagabonds", secret communication techniques, self defense techniques, and many methods of stealth, evasion, and escape from hostile pursuers and other dangerous situations. Due to the cleverness of some of these stealth techniques, I suspect that many skeptics will find them interesting. 1 Although not all of the work will necessarily be of interest to skeptics, much of it is and the information described is of such rarity in English, that the work deserves to be known, if not read, by all interested in Chinese paranormal beliefs.
