United States Navy Seal Combat Manual
For centuries men have discussed the possibility of using swimmers for purposes of war. In the early months of World War II,the possibility became a reality when Italian divers, piloting submersible "Chariots", began to damage and sink allied Mediterranean shipping almost at will. In due time,English,Japanese,German, and Russian Navies began employing similar tactics. On November 20,1942,the United States became painfully aware of the need for combat swimmers. On that day, during the Amphibious invasion of the Japanese-held island of Tarawa, tragedy struck. A submerged reef stopped a Naval ship. Soldiers were forced to wade in the water for several hundred yards. Many drowned. To provide better pre-assault hydrographic information, and to demolish beach obstacles,Navy Combat Demolition Units were formed.
