Power Training in Kung-fu and Karate by by Ron Marchini and Leo Fong
Many practitioners of the martial arts have deprived themselves of an opportunity to reach their maximum peak
through weight training because of their fear of becoming muscle bound.
But here are other factors to consider as well. Research has shown that very few have
the skeletal and body structure to become a potential "Mr.America." This is particularly true
of those in martial arts. Participants in the martial arts are usually small boned and posess
small, wiry builds designed for efficiancy rather than muscularity. The belief that every person who
trains with weights will become a subject for a bodybuilding magazine is illusory.
Ron Marchini, Black Belt Hall of Fame member and top tournament competitor, demonstrates this weight-training regimen with partner and kung fu expert Leo Fong. Included are weight routines, iron hand exercises, kicking and nonweight-resistance exercises. These exercises supplement regular martial arts workouts for developing explosive power. Fully illustrated.
