Despite good organization and exceptionally clear photos (especially for this type of instruction manual), this is still a book that would be most useful to accompany readers' own participation in judo classes. For one thing, judo flips and throws involve a partner. But more importantly, no photo or description can guarantee that students will perform the moves safely. That said, this is one of the more appealing titles on this martial art. It covers information that beginners need: uniforms, behavior in class, competitions, and Japanese terminology. Little is said about the history of judo. This is a good book for students or prospective students pursuing this martial art and interested in looking at techniques that are both similar and variant to what they learn in their classes.
