The Karate Spirit by Randall G Hassell |
karate spirit and randall hassellphilosophies and martial artsThe Karate Spirit by Randall G. Hassell, is a collection of essays, each of which began as an article in Black Belt magazine. They are not long, each one is about two pages in length, but they each have a very individual purpose. Many of these essays start with a Japanese word that, of course has a literal meaning in English, but cannot really be captured by its literal meaning. These essays begin with a literal translation and then continue with a story from Hassells life. Most of these come from his experience as a Shotokan karate student and instructor. All of them have the purpose of trying to give a better understanding of an indescribable word. In their original language, most of these words have the purpose of capturing a feeling so the stories serve as a way to help the reader identify with the feeling that the word should capture. Most of the other essays are based around his life experiences as well. These stories are not used to describe a feeling though, rather some of them are to describe history, certain philosophies, and the development and changes in the art throughout time. Reading these essays not only makes me want to meet the author but makes me want to train in martial arts so that I can have as much insight into life as he does. Deep down these articles have a serious meaning but on the surface are also light, funny and entertaining.
