The second book in the Best Karate series, this text is a shorter version of the far superior Dynamic Karate, also by Nakayama-Sensei. Nevertheless, this little book has some virtue of its very own. The text is broken down into a few sections: * The Hips * Stance * Dynamics * Key Points * Key Training I like this book a lot in that it takes karate from its primary movement, how the hips move and rotate. Everything is tied to the hips. All movement must utilize or reverberate in the hips. The hips lock all of karate's movements together and connect the whole of technique. The material is still very relevant to Shotokan practitioners today, and the photos are great. The material on stance is quite straightforward and helpful. It is great to see Yahara-Sensei and Osaka-Sensei in action. Nice stuff. You can follow the guidelines of these stances and check yourself in the mirror to make sure that you are doing the same things. Take the ratios presented to heart and make sure to keep your stance, particularly in the directions that your body seems more resistant. The sections Dynamics and Key Points are quite helpful as well, albeit abridged. I liked the information on movement and direction changing. I wish there was a little more material on fumikomi and fumidashi as both are quite closely related in some ways. What might appear to be a fumidashi can also be very much fumikomi as well. It is not always so clear-cut. Nevertheless, more excellent material from Shotokan legends. Read it and learn. The Best Karate series is a must have for karate students who intend on wearing the white gi for more than a few years. It is mandatory reading, but good reading too. Flap your arms or click your heels together to get yourself to the nearest bookstore. Demand they carry these books. They may not be around forever.
