Aikido

Aikido is a modern Japanese form of martial arts, with a rich and fascinating philosophy. Many people are surprised on first seeing the movements of Aikido due to its similarities in appearance to dance. The most important reason for this similarity is that Aikido, like dance, involves a blending with someone else's movement and energy. In Aikido, the purpose of this blend is to use the attacker's force and intent as a means to subdue and control him or her. Flow is the name of the game, and it takes practice and discipline to perfect.

Growth of Aikido

Started in Japan, Aikido was first practiced on American soil in the 1950's. Since then the Aikido community has grown from a small group of predominately Japanese-Americans in Hawaii to include schools in every state and major city. More importantly, and unlike most other martial arts, its influence extends to people who have never set foot in an Aikido school.
